ATEX Cameras for Hazardous Areas: Which Type Do You Need?

An ATEX camera is not one product but a family. What they share is a certification that proves the camera cannot ignite an explosive gas or dust atmosphere; what separates them is the job. This page is the overview of every camera type we supply, so you can go straight to the right sub-category. For photos and video in the field

The Armadex OZC-3 (4K, optical zoom, Zone 2/22), the Pixavi Cam for Zone 1 and the TOUGHPIX DIGITHERM belong to the operator: inspection photos, handover reports, live video to a remote expert. This is the largest group in the shop and has its own page with a full comparison.

For temperature instead of appearance

Where temperature is the finding, a thermographic camera replaces the photo camera. The FLIR Cx5 covers handheld thermography in Zone 2, the FLIR A310 Ex and the Dräger UCF 8000 and UCF 9000 cover Zone 1 and fixed monitoring, and the infrared camera section lists further models, including a gas detection IR camera.

For permanent surveillance

Permanent surveillance of a process area calls for a different construction: a flameproof or stainless steel housing, PoE or fibre, and a video management system. The Hikvision explosion-proof domes and bullets, the SamCon ExCam range, Commcam and Videotec Wasex are found under IP network cameras and CCTV cameras. Models with motorised zoom, up to 36x, are grouped under zoom cameras.

For the inside of pipes and tanks

For the inside of pipes, tanks and vessels there are certified inspection cameras: the iRis XT articulating videoscope, the P571 Ex pipe camera system and the mini-cam Solopro+. The ESPO series is the exception for Zone 0, with a camera head that may sit inside the tank itself.

Zone first, then features

Every camera type is available for Zone 2/22, most for Zone 1/21 and a few for Zone 0. Decide on the zone first, then on optics, resolution and connectivity. The certificate number is on every product page and can be verified in the public IECEx database. Handheld cameras ship from stock in 1-3 working days; fixed camera systems are usually specified together with you, and that advice is free.
