Media Converter and Optical Transceiver (opis) for inherently safe optical signals - Safe Industrial Ethernet in hazardous areas.

The PRIMATION P-Ex OTR opis Media Converter series provides inherently safe optical radiation (op is) for fiber optic networks in explosive atmospheres. Certified for use in Mining (Ma), Gas (Ga), and Dust (Da) environments including Zone 0, Zone 1, and Zone 2 areas, these media converters ensure safe Industrial Ethernet communication where traditional fiber optics could pose ignition risks.

Available in two performance variants - 100 Mbit/s (MC 100) and 1000 Mbit/s (MC 1000) - the P-Ex OTR opis series converts between copper/fiber to fiber or from multi-mode fiber to single-mode fiber with ranges up to 15km. Full compliance with DIN EN 60079-28 ensures that optical power is limited to safe levels (≤ 35mW), preventing ignition even under fault conditions such as cable damage or focused light beams.

The op is protection concept offers exceptional flexibility in hazardous areas - fiber optic cables can be connected or disconnected under voltage in Zone 1, providing excellent installation and maintenance advantages. Built-in safety circuitry with power limiting modules ensures continuous compliance without risk of exceeding safe thresholds.

WHY YOU NEED THIS MEDIA CONVERTER

While fiber optic cables are often perceived as risk-free in explosion-prone areas, unprotected optical radiation can actually ignite explosive atmospheres. High-powered laser light or focused light beams from damaged cables can generate sufficient heat to trigger ignition in gas, dust, or mining environments.

The P-Ex OTR opis addresses this critical safety gap by implementing the op is (inherently safe optical radiation) protection concept. Unlike "op sh" (shut down) systems that cause costly production stoppages, or "op pr" (protected optical radiation) requiring expensive containment infrastructure, the op is approach limits optical energy to safe levels while maintaining full network functionality.

With Zone 0, 1, and 2 certification, extreme temperature capability (-40°C to +80°C), and redundant power supply, this media converter provides the reliability and safety required for critical industrial networks in petrochemical plants, oil & gas facilities, pharmaceutical manufacturing, mining operations, and grain handling facilities.
