Rugged Equipment for Industrial Use

Rugged and explosion proof are not the same thing, and this category exists to keep them apart. A rugged device survives drops, dust, water and vibration; it is tested to IP68 or MIL-STD-810 and built for construction sites, logistics and field service. An explosion proof device is certified not to ignite an explosive atmosphere. Some devices are both, many rugged devices are not, and using a rugged but uncertified phone in a zoned area is a common and serious mistake.

What is in this category

The rugged phones and rugged tablets here are chosen for industrial environments outside the zones or, where stated, with additional Ex certification. The CAT S60 with its thermal imaging camera and the Huawei OPH R951 GSM-R handset for railway use are rugged phones without ATEX approval. The Mesa 2 rugged tablet with UHF RFID and Windows 10 and the Nautiz and Algiz handhelds are rugged computers for field work. The Zebra TC72 and TC77 touch computers and the Chainway C66 scanner are rugged data collection devices, and the TC77ex-NI is the Ex version of the same platform.

When rugged is enough

If the device never enters a classified area, rugged is the right and cheaper choice: warehouses, workshops, vehicles, outdoor sites. As soon as the work can take the device into a Zone 2 or Zone 1 area, even occasionally, you need the certified equivalent, which we list under ATEX smartphones, ATEX tablets and ATEX scanners. The Armadex Ex-RIK inspection kit and the Tab-Ex 05 DZ2 shown here are examples of devices that are rugged and certified at the same time.
