ATEX RFID Readers for Hazardous Areas
RFID reads a tag without line of sight, through dirt, paint and darkness, which is why it is replacing barcodes on equipment, valves, drums and gas cylinders in process plants. The reader, however, is an active radio transmitter with a battery, and inside a zoned area it must be certified. This category lists the ATEX RFID readers we supply, all of them intrinsically safe handhelds for Zone 1/21, together with the certified tags they read.
Handheld readers
The iRFID500 is a Bluetooth UHF reader for Zone 1 that pairs with a certified smartphone or tablet, the right choice for long-range reading of pallets, containers and equipment from a few metres away. The iRFID101 Enhanced is its Zone 1 counterpart for close-range work. The i.safe MOBILE IS-MP.1 reads HF and NFC tags and is the compact option for identification at arm's length, for example on valve tags and inspection points. The R1280I skID reader and the TagTrans RFID-HF1 with Bluetooth complete the range, and the Ident-Ex 01 combines RFID with a 1D/2D barcode imager for sites that use both. Cases, USB adapters and the IS-MP.1 accessories are listed alongside.
Which frequency
Choose the frequency by reading distance and by what you tag. Low frequency (LF) and high frequency (HF, including NFC) read at centimetres and are insensitive to metal and liquids, which suits valves, flanges and drums. Ultra high frequency (UHF) reads at several metres and multiple tags at once, which suits stock and logistics. The reader and the tags must match, so both are in this section: certified ATEX RFID tags for Zone 1/21 are available as epoxy discs, on-metal tags, cable-tie tags and the M-series industrial tags in LF, HF, NFC and UHF versions. Fixed installations use the ATEX RFID antennas TPA 350, 700 and 920 in the antenna category.
Readers for other tasks
If most of your reading is barcodes, start with the ATEX barcode scanners instead. For guard tours and inspection rounds there is a dedicated intrinsically safe guard tour reader. Readers and tags ship from stock in 1-3 working days across Europe and worldwide, and for larger tagging projects we supply sample sets so you can test read ranges on your own equipment first.
