The Xciel XCZ1 iPad mini 7 is an aluminium enclosure with glass windows for the Apple iPad mini 7 (A17 Pro). It allows the iPad to be used in Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas with explosive gas atmospheres. For buyers looking for an explosion proof or intrinsically safe iPad: the protection concept of the XCZ1 is a flameproof enclosure, Ex db, as stated on the certificates. It is not intrinsic safety.
The enclosure is certified under ATEX (EU-type examination certificate ExVeritas 23ATEX1721X, issue 1; marking II 2 G Ex db IIB T6 Gb) and IECEx (IECEx EXV 23.0054X, issue 1; marking Ex db IIB T6 Gb), for an ambient temperature of -20 °C to +50 °C. The certification covers gas group IIB and gas atmospheres only. The XCZ1 is therefore not suitable for IIC gases such as hydrogen or acetylene, and it is not certified for dust zones (Zone 21 and Zone 22).
The iPad is fitted into the enclosure by Xciel or an authorised partner. The enclosure must not be opened by the user.

Wi-Fi + Cellular: according to Apple, the Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad mini 7 supports 5G and uses eSIM only. It does not accept physical SIM cards.
Why choose the XCZ1 iPad mini 7?
Flameproof Ex db, not intrinsic safety
The iPad mini 7 inside is a standard Apple tablet. Protection comes from the flameproof aluminium enclosure (type of protection "d" to IEC 60079-1), which is designed to withstand an internal explosion and prevent its transmission to the surrounding atmosphere.
Zone 1 and Zone 2, gas group IIB
Category 2 G, equipment protection level Gb, for Zone 1 and Zone 2. Gas groups IIA and IIB, temperature class T6. Not for IIC gases such as hydrogen or acetylene. No dust marking, so not for Zone 21 or Zone 22.
iPad mini 7 with A17 Pro
For the Apple iPad mini 7 with A17 Pro chip, 8.3 inch Liquid Retina display and iPadOS. Available with 128, 256 or 512 GB, as Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Cellular (5G) model.
Fitted by Xciel
The iPad is fitted by Xciel or an authorised partner. Under the certificate conditions the aluminium case must not be opened. The end user may only remove the fasteners of the USB charging port cover and the SIM card cover.
Aluminium and glass
Aluminium enclosure with glass windows and rubber corner bumpers. General dimensions 247.6 x 187.1 x 35.6 mm according to the certificates. Xciel's datasheet states IP54.
Optional accessories
Xciel lists a magnet mounting system, locking system, stylus, ballistic nylon case, carrying handle, shoulder strap, chest harness and hard shell carrying case as options. Ask us if you need one of these.

Reading the marking
II 2 G: equipment group II (places other than mines susceptible to firedamp), category 2 for explosive gas atmospheres, for use in Zone 1 and Zone 2.
Ex db: flameproof enclosure, level of protection "db". This is not intrinsic safety (Ex ia, ib or ic).
IIB: gas group IIB, which also covers IIA. Not for gas group IIC, which includes hydrogen and acetylene.
T6: temperature class T6, maximum surface temperature 85 °C.
Gb: equipment protection level Gb, for Zone 1 and Zone 2.
Not for Zone 0 and not for dust: the enclosure is category 2 equipment and carries no dust marking, so it is not certified for Zone 0, Zone 21 or Zone 22.
Specific conditions of use (X)
The certificate numbers carry the suffix X. The ATEX and IECEx certificates state the following specific conditions of use:
- Do not open the aluminium case.
- The iPad shall not be charged, by cable or wireless, when hazardous atmospheres are present. The equipment shall only be charged with a suitably approved charger.
- Flameproof joints shall not be modified or repaired. Contact the manufacturer for information on the flameproof joints.
- Fasteners in the equipment are thread locked and shall not be removed or replaced without the manufacturer's approval. The only fasteners the end user may remove or replace are those of the USB charging port cover and the SIM card cover. Refer to the manufacturer's safety instructions for installation and fastener type.
- The rubber bumpers must be installed on the equipment at all times to protect the corners of the aluminium case, and must be visually inspected for good condition before each use.

Zone 1 and Zone 2 gas areas
