Certification
The XCZ1 case for the iPad mini 5 is a flameproof aluminium enclosure, type of protection Ex db. For buyers looking for an explosion proof or intrinsically safe iPad mini: the protection concept is a flameproof enclosure, as stated on the IECEx certificate. It is not intrinsic safety.

Reading the marking
Ex db: flameproof enclosure, level of protection "db". This is not intrinsic safety (Ex ia, ib or ic).
IIC: gas group IIC, which also covers IIA and IIB. IIC includes hydrogen and acetylene.
T5: temperature class T5, maximum surface temperature 100 °C.
Gb: equipment protection level Gb, for Zone 1 and Zone 2.
Not for Zone 0 and not for dust: equipment protection level Gb is not for Zone 0, and the marking has no dust part, so the case is not certified for Zone 21 or Zone 22.
Specific conditions of use (X)
The certificate number carries the suffix X. The IECEx certificate states the following specific conditions of use:
- The iPad mini shall not be removed from the aluminium case.
- The iPad mini shall not be charged when hazardous atmospheres are present.
- Resellers and end users are not allowed to repair the flameproof joints. Xciel Inc. is not allowed to repair the flameproof joints either.
- The cover bolts should not be removed. They may only be replaced with identical ones: A2 stainless steel M5 x 0.8 x 8 mm Torx head (or pan head if Torx head is not available), with a tensile strength of at least 500 MPa, installed with a torque of 5.9 Nm.
- After recharging the iPad mini, inspect the threads of the power plug and the female threads before re-installation. Install the power plug with all threads fully engaged and tighten the set screw with the tool provided. Then check that the set screw sits in the groove of the power plug head (M4 x 0.70 mm A2-70 6H stainless steel cup point hexagon socket set screw).
- Rubber bumpers must be installed on the equipment at all times to protect the corners of the aluminium case, and must be visually inspected for good condition before each use.
