The Armadex Ex UniCase is a certified enclosure that allows a standard 10 to 11 inch tablet from Apple, Samsung or Microsoft to be used in hazardous areas classified as Zone 2 (gas) and Zone 22 (dust). For buyers looking for an ATEX tablet or an explosion proof tablet for Zone 2, the UniCase takes a different route: the explosion protection is provided by the enclosure, not by the tablet itself.
The enclosure is certified under ATEX (OBAC 26 ATEX 0194X) and IECEx (IECEx OBAC 26.0005X) and is marked II 3G Ex nR IIC T6 Gc and II 3D Ex tc IIIC T85°C Dc. It is manufactured by Armadex Explosion Protection B.V. in Ridderkerk, the Netherlands.
Price: EUR 1,700 excl. VAT for the Ex UniCase enclosure including the device-specific inlay set for one supported tablet. The tablet is not included. Complete sets with a tablet are listed in the table below.
How It Works
One Certified Enclosure
The ATEX and IECEx certificates cover the enclosure, which is designed for the integration of low-power electronic devices such as tablets. The same certified enclosure is used for every supported tablet model.
Device-Specific Inlays
For each supported tablet, Armadex supplies four device-specific ABS corner inlays matched to the geometry of that model. They hold the tablet in position inside the enclosure and keep its physical buttons usable.
Replace or Upgrade the Tablet
Because the enclosure is separate from the device, the tablet can be replaced or upgraded without changing the certified enclosure. Moving to another supported model means fitting the matching inlay set. Additional inlay sets are available on request.
Tablet Functions Remain Usable
The touchscreen is operated through the transparent front cover, and three stainless steel push buttons operate the tablet's own buttons via a patented inlay system. The cameras, microphones and speakers remain usable, and wireless data is transmitted via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Understanding the Protection and the Marking
Ex nR (restricted breathing): a type of protection "n" to IEC 60079-15 for Zone 2. The sealed enclosure limits the entry of gas, so that during the short periods in which an explosive gas atmosphere may be present outside, the concentration inside the enclosure stays below the lower explosive limit.
Ex tc (protection by enclosure): dust protection to IEC 60079-31 for Zone 22, based on keeping dust out of the enclosure and limiting the maximum surface temperature.
Not intrinsically safe, not flameproof: the UniCase does not use intrinsic safety (Ex i) or a flameproof enclosure (Ex d). It is certified for Zone 2 and Zone 22 only, not for Zone 1 or Zone 21.
II 3G / II 3D: equipment group II, category 3, for gas (G) and dust (D) atmospheres.
IIC T6 Gc: gas group IIC (also covers IIA and IIB), temperature class T6 (maximum surface temperature 85°C), equipment protection level Gc.
IIIC T85°C Dc: dust group IIIC (also covers IIIA and IIIB), maximum surface temperature 85°C, equipment protection level Dc.
Specific Conditions of Use (X)
Both certificate numbers carry the suffix "X". The following specific conditions of use apply:
- The Ex UniCase may only be opened or closed outside the hazardous area.
- The USB lid and the test port plug must always be fitted in the hazardous area.
- The device must be protected from impacts with high impact energy, against excessive UV light and against processes that generate high electrostatic charges.
In addition, the attachment to the IECEx certificate states that a routine test according to IEC 60079-15, clause 10.3, is required for each new type of mobile device installed in the nR enclosure that has not been tested before.
